Are you a little book worm, like me?

I love, love, love books! In all shapes and sizes… and recently… I love electronic books! I get a little thrill of rebellion as I sneak under the covers in bed at night to read my latest adventure on the IPod! And all without disturbing Mr SUDs while he sleeps!

While I love to read Science Fiction and Fantasy novels every night, during the day it’s a different story. It’s craft and sewing literature all the way! Over the past few months I’ve scored three new books that I’d like to share with you.

The first is Cute and Easy Quilting and Stitching by Charlotte Liddle:

If you like the cover project then you’ll like this book! There’s a plethora of shabby little projects adorned with beads and pretty buttons, with a ‘wonky’ kind of look that is perfectly quaint. I particularly like the patchwork dog coat, accessorised with a flower brooch. There’s also a gorgeous coffee pot cozy, and for the smaller projects there are the sweetest bird brooches and babushka maiden dolls. The design style is consistent, but the projects are eclectic - and I therefore think that for variety and value - this book is a really good purchase.

Next up is Everything Alice by Hannah Read-Baldrey and Christine Leech:

This book is a work of art in itself! Co-written by two very talented UK artisans who met at work and discovered that they were both avid Alice in Wonderland fans. The duo both work for Hobbycraft in the UK and have an abundance of experience between them including having worked in television (setting up scenes and making props) and art-directing magazines. These girls are true artists with a love of craft and the book really reflects their quirky natures, experience and raw talent. Can you tell I’m a little bit in love with this one? The photographic styling is awesome, and the projects are compelling. There are sewing projects and baking ideas & recipes among the 50 projects published; but I’m most taken with the intricate paper cut-outs – you get an idea from the front cover of the book – they’re just stunning! And of course all the projects are based on Alice in Wonderland. Even if you never make a project, this book is inspiring and great for leaving out on the coffee table to share with like-minded friends.

Third and finally we have Christmas Crafting in No Time by Clare Youngs:

This gorgeous book is by the same author of Scandinavian Needlecraft (2010), so if you enjoyed that book then you’re sure to love this. It’s in true Scandinavian style – which I know so many of you love as much as I do! There are sewing projects together with recipes for such delicacies as crystallised ginger and Quince jelly. Fur-lined baby boots and hot-water bottle covers are included as patterns in the gift ideas section together with embroidered dala horses and woollen Christmas stockings. Again, there are useful paper cut-out patterns in this book, for decorating the outside of festive cakes and for creating indoor decor for the home. My favourite project is the sewn advent calendar which is a very simplified house-shape with 24 pockets for treats. A lovely book.

These are just my personal opinions! If you have any of these books – what do you think of them? Do you have any others to recommend? I’d love for you to share your opinions with us if you do!!!

If you’re wondering what I’m currently reading while I’m hiding under the sheets at night, it’s this:

The Rendezvous with Rama (trilogy) by Arthur C Clarke. Written in 1972, it absolutely blows me away at not only how this story hasn’t dated, but how absolutely mind-blowing it is. It’s a futuristic story set in space. I’ve read the trilogy already and it was so good that I’m already half way through the series for a second time. If you’d like to learn more about it, click here. I used to watch “Arthur C Clarke’s mysterious world” on TV when I was a little girl and was fascinated by all the unexplained phenomena he debated. Thirty years later I’m rediscovering this narrator/author’s marvellous mind through novels that were published during the year of my birth! I love that!

Talking of bedtime reading… it’s 1am here in Melbourne and I’d best sneak off up to bed! My mind has been really active today and being the night owl that I am… I just kept going!

New year Pips and miniature sewing!

Hello peeps, and Happy new Year! How’s it going?

I’ve been popping in and out of blog land when I can but for the most part I’ve been spending time off the computer and with my family. The kids are off school for another three weeks and so far we’ve had a few days out, a couple of sleepovers and playdates, and Mr SUDs and I have either been full-on with household maintenance OR… just chillin’!! It’s been a wonderful mix of busy and relaxing.

Although I’ve not spent much time in the sewing room, I have managed to finish one cute project!

Isn’t this Kitty Ballerina the sweetest?! I made her from a pattern by Kerryanne English of the shabby Art Boutique. My little Rosie wanted her version of Kitty to be ‘exactly’ the same as Kerryanne’s, but we left off the whiskers at Rosie’s request.

This Kitty doll is my first PIP of the year! Are you wondering what a PIP is??

The lovely Stephanie over at Loft Creations is getting us all motivated to finish our Projects In Progress! I’ve got a few in the drawer so it’s good to know I’m not alone and there are lots of other ladies working towards the same goal! It keeps you going! Or it does me, anyway! Did you guys have a nice Christmas? We had a very quiet Christmas at home, Mr SUDs parents came to stay for the day and I enjoyed cooking a full Roast dinner with all the trimmings. The weather in Melbourne was really strange – very hot and sticky – but overcast and stormy. I can’t remember a time before when I’ve seen lightning storms on Christmas day, but it all added to the charm.

Mr SUDs and I chose our own gifts this year, and mine was this stunning vintage toy sewing machine – the ‘Sew Master’ by Kay-EE…

Isn’t it adorable? I also picked up this little stunner on eBay…

This machine is a Casige, manufactured in Germany during the 1920’s. It has a glorious art nouveau design painted over it. Here’s a group shot of my small collection:

I had a little giggle to myself… remembering the times when I used to get excited over a night out dancing or the latest new album by my favourite artist… but in this time of my life I get excited about little vintage toy sewing machines!!

Well, I’m off out again now… the family and I are going out to watch our fave football (soccer) team – Melbourne Victory – vs Adelaide - in the City. Can’t wait! Whatever you are up to – I hope you’re having a wonderful time!

Christmas decor…

Can you believe we’re in the final week of Advent?! For those of you who answered a resounding NO!… then I’m right there with you!

I’ve spent the past few weeks re-painting our downstairs living area, making gifts for loved ones, participating in school excursions, making copious lists of everything I still want to achieve, and getting over the bump of an illness hurdle.

But! It’s all coming together and I’m winning! How about you??

I love having white paintwork. Since moving in to our home seven years ago, we have lived with the happy yellow walls and doors. But it just clashed with everything! The house is so much more serene now and my mind feels clear.

I got some bargains on EBay including the wicker chair above ! It sure pays to shop around… and it gives you more ideas too!

I love these Jim Shore ornaments, this year I added the Santa Kitty cat to our collection… again, another bargain purchased on EBay.

I bet you could never guess where I purchased this dresser?! You got it! I should be on commission here shouldn’t I?!!

Works in progress for Chrissie gifts!

I have been juggling a few more projects than normal just recently, just to make sure that I get all my gifts hand made and finished before the gift-giving season commences!!

Fancy a peek?

Some soft pencil shading on this wonderfully whimsical stitchery design by the gorgeous Cheryl over at Willowberry Designs. I just love the playfulness in Cheryl’s designs, they really bring out the ‘little girl’ in me!! Actually, if truth be known, Cheryl is also very apt at bringing out the little girl in me – she’s been a dear friend since our Gumtree days, and always puts a smile on my dial and tickles my funny bone!!

This darling project is destined for a very special friend… I’ll show you more when it’s finished!

Next up is a completed paper craft project. I can show you this in entirety because the lovely lady it is destined for is too busy to read blogs at the moment – she’s only two weeks off giving birth to her fourth child! She’s been finding it difficult to get her sketch pad in the right position because her tummy is getting in the way! So I thought she might appreciate a new creative journal, for those stolen moments in the future when baby is asleep.

I used scrapbooking paper by Kaisercraft, I think it is called ‘Chapter One’. The tree is also a Kaisercraft product and I painted it with acrylic paints and gave the leaves some sparkle with Crystalina KindyGlitz by Derivan.

The dragonfly charms were hand sewn to the paper and secured with sticky tape on the reverse.

Finally, I made a personalised tag and attached it to the binder along with some co-coordinating ribbons.

Now… can you guess what this is going to be?

Something purfectly girlie and frou frou! Anyone who knows by little Rosie knows that she is obsessed with kitties! When she clapped eyes on THIS beautiful feline she fell in love instantly and has requested that I make one EXACTLY the same. “Mummy,” she exclaimed excitedly, “this has to go top of the list, so everything else I’ve asked you to make for me will have to wait!”

Aye, aye Capt’n!!!!

Okay – best be off – I’m also working on a tutorial that you’ll be able to find over at Simply Christmas in a couple of weeks’ time! Have you been following along?

Diva Diner published in Homespun & a sneak peek!

As the interior decorating continues, I managed to take some time out this past week to catch up on some crafting goodness! My mojo is returning to its former glory. Have you heard the old saying, “if you want a job done, give it to a busy woman!”? Well, that saying holds so true for me. Now I’m up to the elbows in wall paint, I’m energised and having to carry my notebook around with me as new ideas keep popping in to my mind.

My notebook also contains daily lists. Here’s an excerpt from last weekend: 1. Supervise six year old sweetheart while she helps to paint walls; 2. Turn back and wonder where aforementioned six year old has disappeared to with paint-roller; 3. Roll eyes and exasperate; 4. Bath the dog!

It is always mojo-inducing and a real thrill to have a project published in your favourite magazine – and that too happened this week! The current issue of Australian Homespun magazine is the ‘Food, glorious food’ issue and my ‘Diva Diner’ recipe card holder is the bonus web project.

I designed this project for my sweet friend Deb from The Angel & the Pukeko as part of a special Christmas package last year. Deb is mad crazy about red and white polka dots and she plans to decorate her kitchen to accommodate her growing collection of dotty goodness. Hence I designed a recipe card holder – one that can be hung from a kitchen cupboard whether it has a handle or a nob. Deb’s favourite recipes can be written up on cards and viewed through the plastic window without concerns that the card might get splattered! (Not that I’m saying you’re a messy cook, Deb!!!)

When I think of polka dots, I think of the 1950’s and so designed this project around some pictures I found of a 50’s diner with its gently curving roofline and light bulb-surrounded signage. Even the straps were designed with reference to the knots in the scarves that girls would use to put up their hair. The ‘original’ was named ‘Deb’s Diner’!

This issue of Homespun (No. 102), and all future issues are available in digital format on iPad or HERE, which makes it widely available and also opens up a whole new way of enjoying the magazine!

There are some wonderful projects including a sweet red-work table runner by the lovely Leanne Knell of Petals & Patches – do you remember the Matroyshka sewing set I made here? Gosh I love her stuff! Plus, there’s a fabulous shopping tote designed by the talented Vivian Robinson of Viv’s Creations – you can see some of her amazing designs at Mrs Martin’s Quilt Shop. There’s also a quirky octopus (who is way too cute to put in the cooking pot!) designed by softie sensation Pauline McArthur of Funky Friends Factory. Pauline is currently gifting new newsletter subscribers with one of her cute softie patterns so head on over and say Hi!

With all this talk of cute and soft it’s time to give you a sneak peek of one (of two) possible conclusions to my free BOM, Angels Playing Happily…

Intrigued? I hope so! There will be a full-on photo session for this project over the weekend. I’m planning to complete the interior painting of my hallway tomorrow so that I can put the hooks back up and then hang the angelic project in order to get some good pics!!! My creative space!

This past few days my creative space has been in the SUDs’ family lounge room!

At close of play yesterday, the first coat of ‘Ivory Stone’ was on the walls.

A vast difference from the yellow, eh? That’s a dividing wall between the lounge and the front door and it will all soon be the same colour. I am looking forward to painting the front door white!

Mr SUDs and Master SUDs applied the second coat of wall paint last night, and today I have been glossing the window frames and skirting boards, it’s looking really good!

Okay – my coffee break is over – back to it!!

Following your creative dreams – the next step!

Creative dreams!

Doesn’t it make your heart flutter just a wee bit - reading those two very poignant words?! Yes? I know – mine is fluttering too!

We are all individual, and our dreams will all be different… but for us creative souls there is a common ground, for we are always thinking about POSSIBILITES! It’s the nature of a creative mind… to seek out, to explore… and then to stay awake all night because we’ve stumbled across a new idea that is just way too exciting! The hamster starts running on its wheel, the cogs start turning, and the idea develops! As far as sleep is concerned - it’s game over!! I bet I’m not alone, right? *smile*

As your mind explores the creative universe you may come up with ideas of your own. Perhaps you have friends and family telling you that you should sell your original works or designs? If you’re still doubting yourself, I can tell you now that if you’re receiving encouragement – GO FOR IT! What is there to lose?!! Kerryanne gave me a pre-release copy of this book to read and review, and I have to say – once I started – I couldn’t put it down!! I honestly can’t recommend it highly enough to anyone wanting to start out in this wonderful creative industry. The advice is professional, succinct, wholly appropriate and in my opinion, invaluable. After absorbing the wisdom of Kerryanne’s 20 years’ experience in business (no mean feat!) you learn more about the lovely lady, herself… I particularly enjoyed reading the story of Kerryanne’s own personal journey, it was just so inspirational! Then of course there is the project – the artful ‘Business book project’, designed and USED by Kerry herself! You can make your own journal to assist with keeping you organised and on-track… quick and easy to make by printing Kerryanne’s original artwork and subsequent templates. A very thoughtful bonus!

On a personal note, although I have taken a few of the steps in starting my own creative business, I know that this book will be an invaluable tool for me to refer back to on particular topics, and I’m sure it will help enormously with keeping me on track! I’ve enjoyed the pleasure of Kerryanne’s friendship for several years now and it was she (my painting tutor at the time) who encouraged me to start blogging and put my designs ‘out there’. Kerry set up my blog and kick-started my journey. I’ve had the benefit of her advice, given so generously, over the years and she is an absolute star! Reading Kerry’s book is just like sitting in a room with her and chatting over a hot cup of tea. A real pleasure!

Handmade Country Christmas and stitching progress!

I’ve been thinking about Christmas a lot this week, planning gifts to make and getting excited as I’m seeing the glitzy decorations fill up the shelves in the department stores! In my book, Christmas can never come too early!!

I guess the weather in Melbourne of recent has certainly got me ‘feeling’ Christmas too… it’s been so cold and blustery that it could be mistaken for a December day in the northern hemisphere (okay I exaggerate – it’s way colder in England - but the ‘feeling’ is the same!!!)

Today however, Spring has come back for a visit and I’m hoping that this time she’ll decide to stay :-)

I took some photos outside this morning, and snapped this one of Kayla enjoying the freshly cut lawn and soaking up some sunshine…

… can you smell the sweet scent of the grass? It made me smile this morning taking Rosie to school because she exclaimed, “I LOVE the smell of the weather!” Kids put their thoughts in to words so well don’t they? I had a second smile to myself after having a discussion with her about her teacher’s new puppy. On pondering what breed the dog might be, Rosie thoughtfully announced, “Well, I think it’s either a girl or a boy…”

Yep – gotta love kids!

Back to the garden, and the photographs I was taking. Now are you thinking exotic plants and amazing water features???? He he he… well in my garden, there are magazines!!! A magazine bush – wow – wouldn’t that be good???? Each new issue of our favourite magazines produced each month is a bio-degradable cellophane wrapper to keep the snails from nibbling! I think there is an equivalent, it’s called a ‘subscription’ or something like that – but a magazine bush would be much more fun don’t ya think?!

I have a stitchery project published in this issue, let me introduce you to Pudding Cheer…

I have been enjoying the Christmas Fun BOM by Lynette Anderson, and my needle turn applique is improving… unless I’m chatting with friends and then it all kinda gets a bit wonky!

It just remains to start loading up that Santa’s sleigh with toys!!!!!

How to bring a vintage toy sewing machine back to life!

I’m still obsessing about vintage toy sewing machines! I picked up this Little Betty off eBay, and it wasn’t in the best condition… but I was determined to preserve it! It took a few attempts but my determination prevailed!!

I started off my journey with an internet search on “removing rust from metal” and came across a home remedy. The DIY Professional on the video suggested mixing Bi-Carb Soda with either vinegar or lemon juice until it developed a paste… and then applying that paste to the rusted area for several minutes before wiping off.

So I gathered the ingredients and materials – including rubber gloves… and gave it a go.

After the clock had ticked by a few times I wiped the paste mixture off the machine with kitchen wipes, and then attempted scrubbing at the rusted surface with an old toothbrush. There wasn’t much rust-loss so I increased the abrasion by using fine-grade sandpaper. It shifted some of the rust, but not to any great degree as you can see in the photo below.

Next up was WD40… I saturated the rusted surface and left it for a few minutes, then scrubbed with the toothbrush…

That method didn’t prove to be effective either! But then… just as I was giving up hope that my Little Betty would shine again… Mr SUDs came to the rescue with his ‘over the counter’ rust removal product!

Lots of sandpaper…. and lots of elbow-grease… and the result was awesome!

I cleaned the plastic casing with some ‘sticky stuff remover’, shined up the base with the same product, and then oiled the plate with some 3-in-one oil to prevent any further rusting.

The machine works – and it’s clean!

We’re on school holidays here in Melbourne so there’s lots of activity in the house! I’ve decided that the quickest way to get your child’s attention is to sit down with a nice hot cup of tea and make yourself really comfortable… better still, pick up some stitching to enjoy while your tea is cooling to the ‘perfect’ temperature. It works every time!! *wink* I’m going to design a pair of pants (trousers) with a spring embedded in their seat! Do you think they’ll catch on???

A new vintage toy!

I have a new toy…

…one that I won’t be playing with because it’s a little bit old and rusty!

Isn’t it CUTE?!

I have been eye-ing off vintage toy sewing machines for some months now and at last, one has come to live with me!

This Vulcan was made in Germany in the 1940’s/50’s

To give you an idea of its scale… here it is sitting next to its big ‘Brother’!!!

I love the shape and design of this one – it really screams ‘1950’s’ doesn’t it?!!

My new Creative Journal and a giveaway!

Do you keep a creative journal? By that, I mean do you keep pictures and record all of the things you have made over the years?

I used to keep a comprehensive journal many moons ago. This page records a dragon that I designed for my son when he was seven years old.

I included details about dates, inspiration, costs, techniques and fabrics used, etc. But as time went on, and my creativity became more prolific, I was hard-pressed to even print off all the photos I had taken let alone find the time to write up about them in my journal! Plus, I didn’t need all that information, I was really only interested in keeping a visual together with knowing when I made the item and who for.

The way we use technology has changed so much in the past seven years since I scrawled all those notes about Aaron’s dragon! We live in a digital age where our photos are stored on our computers – where software is user-friendly – and it’s all becoming so much easier for the ‘non-techy’ person (like me) to navigate their way around “stuff” (do you like my techno lingo?!!!)

So when I was asked if I would like to review the My Memories Suite of digital scrapbooking software, I didn’t hesitate in saying YES! It was only seconds before I thought how great it would be to keep a quilting/creative journal that I could add to easily and required no “printing-off” of photographs!

I had a play over the weekend and this is what I came up with:

The software is easy to navigate, very intuitive. You can choose templates already set up with pretty graphics and drop your photographs in, and add text. Or you can design your own template which is what I’ve done here. There are different background papers, textures and colours. You can manipulate your photographs and text, and add all kinds of sweet, vintage or funky embellishments. Not only did I feel good about getting back in to keeping a creative journal – but it was so much fun! I also found it really interesting playing with different colours and thought this would be a great way to play around with colour palettes for future sewing projects.

I shall show you more of my journal pages as I create them! Of course, this software can be used for any kind of digital scrapbooking – family memories, special occasions, recording achievements etc. You can even add music to your albums if you so wish. Or like me, you can save them as stand alone Jpeg files and publish them on your blog!

Stitching progress, Homespun and one cute find!

Hi all! I hope you are enjoying your weekend as much as I am? Spending time at home with family, stitching and watching the weather alternate between sunshine and hail storms has been all part of the charm. I’m such a homebody! How about you?

I haven’t touched my sewing machine since making Rosie’s mermaid costume (thank you so much for your lovely messages!!), but instead I’ve enjoyed some needle turn applique and hand stitching while working on Lynette Anderson’s ‘Christmas Fun’ BOM. Two more stitchery blocks are now complete…

Each block comes with a hand-painted wooden button. I’ve placed the angel button on the top of the tree for this photo, but will sew them all in place once the quilt has been put together. The tree is my favourite so far – I love the white snowflakes on the beige background.

This row of angels are yet to have their faces added – as I am yet to make the yoyo’s for them.

Since taking these photos yesterday afternoon I have stitched another block – once I get going I just can’t stop!! But here’s a photo of progress to date without the block I’ve just mentioned.

My children have been homebodies this week too, due to some viruses that are travelling about at the moment. So I popped out yesterday afternoon to buy them a sweet treat and spied the latest copy of Australian Homespun while I was at the grocery store – what a bonus!

This issue (No.100 Vol 12.9) is brimming with inspiring projects from front to back cover! I love the colour palette on the front cover, do you? This is the ‘Romance’ issue! I was first struck by the pretty handbag that is featured on the cover… and was delighted to read that the beauty is designed by my sweet friend Joy over at Joypatch! There is also a pretty sewing set by Lisa over at Cubby House Crafts, and the most feminine cushion designed by Melissa Grant of One Day in May – someone I will be definitely watching out for from now on! I am giggling as I write this because I’m sure I sound like a marketeer!! Truth is, I can’t help but wax lyrical about the things I love, and I REALLY love Homespun as I know many of my friends do!

I am aware that it’s been difficult for overseas fans to purchase this magazine but that is now a thing of the past, because Homespun has just gone DIGITAL. How cool is that?!! The last thing I wanted to share with you today is this wonderful tablecloth that I bought last week from my local thrift store. It’s in the above picture, and this is what it looks like on my side table…

I haven’t ironed it yet because it needs a gentle wash first – but I couldn’t wait to show you! I had thought about making a vintage-style apron out of it, but it’s just too beautiful to cut up! All those cross stitches… it must have taken someone a long time to create. It has gone to a grateful home, and it got me to thinking about the work I put in to my own creations. If they ever end up in a charity shop in the future I have no problem with that at all – I’d rather a creation give someone pleasure than sit in a cupboard somewhere!!

Before I say goodbye for today I’d just like to say that I’m really happy that you came for a visit! I really enjoy sharing my life and creations with you and never take it for granted. I haven’t been visiting many friends’ blogs recently because I have been investing my time with the children and at home… but it’s important for me to let you know that I haven’t forgotten about you, and that you are treasured friends! I think this is the ‘way’ with blogging – it ebbs and flows – and it has to be flexible just like everything else in life. It’s sometimes difficult to put things down in writing and convey them in the way that you’ll hope they’ll be received… so please know this…

A Mermaid’s tale…

This little Mermaid finds it really hard not to pull silly faces when the camera is pointed at her!! It’s one of those ‘withdrawal’ things from being out of the sea for too long!

Balancing on ones ‘fins’ takes a bit of practice, too!!

But this little Mermaid had a birthday party to go to last Saturday – on her very own birthday. SIX years old? I remember when she was just a little egg sitting on a coral leaf!

Rosie (accompanied by Mr SUDs) had an absolute ball at her friends’ party, while I recooperated on the couch from picking up my Mer-Man from the airport during the early hours of the the morning! Aaron and I got home at 3.15am and stayed up chatting for a while before getting a couple of hours sleep before the birthday girl awoke. Her best gift was having her big brother back home!! (Yes, it was my favourite gift too!!)

Our young Mermaid loved her costume, and that in itself was a wonderful gift to me! I couldn’t find a pattern I liked so made it up myself. I really don’t enjoy working with sequins and satin – give me 100 per cent cotton any day!

This two-way stretch fabric was good to work with though, it didn’t fray and was a dream to sew with, helped by using a special ‘stretch’ needle in my sewing machine. I learned quite a few new things too. I was aiming for the pleated halter neck top to look like clam shells – and it did UNTIL I top-stitched it. The secured edges took out the pleats. So I made individually quilted clam shells out of the leftover fabric and hand stitched them to the bust area.

I also learned that sequined fabric (tail fins) is not kind to sewing machines. Luckily I’ve had enough sewing experience to think to put tearaway beneath the fabric before I sewed with it – as this prevented all the little bits of plastic sequin from going in to the feed dogs of my machine and leaving debris. But I didn’t realise that the sequins could break machine needles… I took it really slowly after that incident; and to cut down on sewing time, rather than over lock the seams, I used a product called Fray Stop ™ .

The very next day… our little Mermaid transformed in to a Fairy!

Just about to blow out the candle on her gluten-free Kitty-cat birthday cake!

Isn’t that the weirdest Kitty-cat cake you’ve ever seen?! LOL I ran out of icing sugar to make the fondant… after six hours straight in the kitchen on Saturday night I didn’t have time to purchase more!

But just look at that smile… every single minute of preparation was ALL worth it!

I love my little Merma-Fairy! And I love my gorgeous jet-setting Mer-Man, too!!

Angels Playing Happily Block 2

The angels have been whispering in my ear, “Vikki… it’s time to reveal block two… we want to share in our fun and frolics!”

So without further ado, here it is! Or should I say, “Here SHE is!”

Evangeline is one of the most playful angels in the clouds! She is always seeking out some fun or creating entertainments of her own, and never fails to put a bounce in to the step of every person she touches! One of her favourite pastimes is blowing bubbles, and popping them with her fingers and toes! She just dips her bubble-making wand in to the nearest cloud to get the mixture; Then once the bubbles have been blown and popped they fall down to earth as summer rain showers.

One beary cute finish!

Let me introduce you to Jemima!

This beary sweet teddy was painted on to homespun fabric a few years back now – I can’t believe I left her in my UFO box for so long! I painted her from a pattern by Luanne Wykes that was featured in Australian Bear Creations Annual (Vol 11 No 1).

The original design is called ‘Jemima bear quilt’. I used different borders on mine rather than following the quilt pattern. The button on Jemima’s hat is laser-cut, and I coloured it using pink and green Prismacolour pencils. The wee buttons on the dress are minis manufactured by Dress it Up.

Temporarily hanging in our family room until I can find a space on Rosie’s wall for her…

I shall be back in a couple of days with the next sweet block of Angels playing happily!

A sweet surprise and thrift shop finds!

There are times when your breath gets taken away by someone’s thoughtfulness, and I had one of those times last week when I opened a surprise parcel from my sweet friend, Dawn!

Beautifully wrapped in one of my favourite new fabric lines – Grace by 3 Sisters for Moda… and don’t you just love that jumbo ric-rac?!!

The textiles were a gift in themselves, and then I opened up the squishy parcel to reveal this:

A pretty hand-blown-glass pendant (pictured centre), a pretty pink pen, a plaque with a word that is so important to both Dawn and I, “Family”. Some rose-scented handcream and this amazing hand-made sewing purse…

With even more treasure inside!

WOW!

I just sat and looked at all my pretties for ages. I kept them in a little bundle on my dining room table and admired them, not wanting to put anything away because I just enjoyed visiting its beauty! Do you do that too? When I get a wee pile of birthday or Christmas pressies I always leave them a day or two to admire them, before finding new homes for the items!

Talking of treasures – I discovered a few during my visits to local thrift stores last week!

A blue woollen skirt ideal for some softies… appliqued and crocheted doilies, and an old copy of my favourite craft magazine, Australian Homespun. It has one of my favourite doll patterns inside designed by Karlene Atkins of Katkins Designs!

The pattern is called Lizzie, and if you haven’t got this copy of Australian Homespun (No 10 Vol.3.2) then it is available for sale on Karlene’s website, here. I’m looking forward to making my own Miss Lizzie!

But before I get around to making any more dolls, I’m a bit busy with another project! I’m only two weeks away from both of my children’s birthdays! They are eight years and three days apart in age! The invites for Rosie’s party went out last week…

Aaron is still in England at the moment and will celebrate his birthday the day before he travels back home… but we’ll have double celebrations once he returns, for sure! But I’m guessing his will be a little less…

Vintage leather bags

I’m very much a 70’s “chick” at heart…

I was a young child during that era and lived with three teenage brothers – all of whom donned long hair and were obsessed with motorbikes and the legendary rocker, Suzie Quatro! I was only four years old when my eldest brother married, and I smile now as I remember his attire included the wearing of platform heels – so COOL!

It’s no wonder that I grew up with a love of the fashion and music, and it wasn’t long into my twenties before I began seeking out retro clothes in thrift stores. By then my brothers and their wives were cringing at my choices – but I just couldn’t get enough of 70’s fashion! I began a collection of leather coats and jackets, mostly purchased on eBay. It became a bit of a hobby. I still have these coats (and a small collection of Gunne Sax dresses purchased from America) but unfortunately I have expanded in size over the past few years and they no longer fit me!

But there is one accessory that always fits…. our much-loved…

HANDBAGS!!

I purchased this one off eBay and collected it just this morning. Genuine leather and more than 30 years old…

I love it! I was experimenting in Picnik (online photo-editing software) and used the “1960s effect” for this next image:

It’s amazing how just the look of an old photo can set you back down memory lane, isn’t it?!!

The bag lining is quite tatty but I like the idea of keeping it as part of the original bag. So I’m going to deodorize it and make a fabric insert to go inside.

I also picked up this little leather satchel bag from a thrift store a few months ago:

It needs a long handle but I’m not sure whether to make one of out of fabric (do you think that would look odd?) or to buy a leather handle from a bag making supplier.

My little Kayla made me laugh while I was staging the bags to take photos – she was quite wary of them!

Maybe 70’s vintage just needs to grow on her a bit?!!!

If you have any vintage handbags then I’d love to see them! Give me a shout if you’d like to see some more of my bag collection. I don’t have as many as the lady who sold the large bag to me on eBay. Can you believe she had a collection of 2000? That isn’t a typo…Two THOUSAND!!!! Whoopee-doo!!! Yep – my chin dropped to the floor too!!!!!

Springtime blocks and Ipod pouches

I sure am looking forward to Springtime! There are some very early signs of it in my garden - albeit premature! Daffodils are blooming and buds are forming on the Japanese Maple trees… a lovely teaser for what is yet to come!

If you have followed my blog for a while you may remember that I held an auction back in January to raise money for Flood Relief. The auction was for a complete set of ‘Springtime’ blocks, a quilt designed by the recently disbanded Gum Tree Designers, of which I was once a member. Well, the wonderful Debra from Outback Crafter made the winning bid for the patterns and has made terrific progress on her stitchery blocks! Debra emailed me recently with this photo of the block that I designed, named ‘Sharing’.

Debra is more than half way through the stitcheries now, and you can see more pictures on her blog, here. She’s a fabulous quilter, too! I am in awe of her work – check out this post!!

As part of the auction I promised to make a bespoke quilt label for the winning bidder. I asked each of the Gum Tree Designers to sign a small block of fabric, then put each designer’s ‘signature’ in the same position as their blocks in the quilt design.

I’ve been sewing a lot recently, making gifts for my son’s family in England. My brave boy, all five foot ten of him (he’s 13, will he ever stop growing???), embarked on a 24-hour flight to the north of England last Friday night. He arrived safe and sound and is staying with his Dad, step-mum and two little sisters, for the next four weeks. I miss him like crazy so have been keeping incredibly busy! But before he left I made two little bags for his young sisters and these I-pod covers for his Step-mum and Nana. They’re designed by Janelle Wind and the pattern can be found in her book, Pieces of me. They’re so much fun to make!! I shall most definitely be making more!! (Lisa put me on to this pattern – she’s made quite a few – check out this post!)

Christmas faeries!

Hi! I’m Faerie Noelle… it’s very nice to meet you!

Vikki just finished making me and I’m really enjoying some fresh air outside sitting in this old fir tree! It’s been so cold, wet and rainy in Melbourne for the past few days, so this is my first venture outside!

I was designed by the wonderful talent that is Annie Smith of Country Keepsakes. Vikki loves Annie’s patterns SO much – it won’t be long before I have some more Christmas friends to keep me company as there is a fabulous elf pattern in issue #98 (Vol 12.7) of Australian Homespun magazine – and Vikki plans to make him!!

I can’t wait!!!! He is SOOOO cute! I am planning on getting some mistletoe to hang above his stocking!!! Ooh – just the thought of it is making my cheeks blush!!! *giggle*

Brrrr…. it is getting cold again… I’m going to jingle the bells on my skirt, stretch my wings, and fly back indoors with Vikki!

If you’re wondering, Vikki purchased my pattern and fabrics from one of her most favourite patchwork stores, Missy Moo in Croydon, Vic. The staff in there are as sweet as the little flowers that adorn my pretty-prim dress!

Angels playing happily… Free BOM part one!

Do you love angels?

How about stitching… do you love that too?

If the answer to both of those questions is a resounding YES… then I have a project that is designed especially for YOU!

Angels playing happily consists of two sweet angel stitchery blocks, three verse blocks, and instructions to create an angelic wall-hanging – complete with wings!

Please feel free to add my “Angels” button to the sidebar of your blog and link back to this post, so that others may pop on over and join in with the fun!

The first block is of this beary playful angel! While she snuggles in to her soft white cloud, her cute teddy swings about in the sweet fresh air!

The requirements list for this block is included in the download, and I will have a list of requirements available for the complete project in the next couple of weeks. I would advise, however, to purchase (or retrieve from your stash!) one fat quarter of cloud-themed fabric, or other background fabric of your choice. There will be two angel blocks both measuring 10in (25cm) square. But! If you enjoy this project, I might just create a second one, identical to the first but with different angel and verse blocks. We’ll see what you feel like doing at the close of this project, eh?!!

I absolutely LOVE angels! I also love fairies! The thought of them makes me feel so light and free, it fills me with excitement and wonder! Right now as I describe my feelings to you I feel like a little girl bursting at the seams to go outside and play!! Care to join me?!

I also have a free little stitchery design that you can find in my ‘free patterns’ tab at the top of my blog page. The drawing is of a wee baby angel asleep in a cloud, and it has been so popular. I’ve offered it as a freebie for the past couple of years and I’m still amazed at how many times this little drawing gets downloaded. I struck up a new friendship recently with a lovely lady called Diane, and she sent me a photo to share with you of how she used the stitchery in her ‘hanging heart’ project.

Diane is such a sweetheart! Such a kind and lovely lady, I’m sure glad that I met her!

Show n’ tell!

Hi there! A warm welcome to those of you who are new to my blog… and a warm welcome to those of you who I’ve had the pleasure of knowing for quite some time!

Thank you for the uplifting feedback you’ve given me about both my chat over at Stash Manicure, and the giveaway! I’m still in the process of visiting new blogs and replying to comments… just when you think you know where the borders of the blogosphere lay, there are new doors opened and more creative people to meet! If only we didn’t have to sleep!!!

I usually drink Earl Grey tea, really weak with milk. But just recently I’ve been introduced to Chai tea with milk and honey… so lovely on a cold winter’s day! What’s your favourite brew?

We’re on the second week of school holidays here in Melbourne and it’s been cold and rainy for the most part. A good excuse to cuddle up indoors with a movie, or have friends over for play dates!

I’m working on a mystery BOM called ‘Christmas Fun’ by Lynette Anderson. Here’s my progress on block Two!

Needle turn appliqué and itsy-bitsy Ohio Stars blocks!

Lynette has just posted a pic on her blog of the progress so far. It’s great fun!

Her new fabric line, Scandinavian Christmas, has just hit the stores so I had to dash out and buy some! (Someone really had to twist my arm! *giggle*)

Even the selvedge is adorable!!

I plan to use the fabric for a new Christmas design… or two… or a few! I think this is going to be one of my all-time-favourite fabric lines. Sometimes you can just feel it in your bones, can’t you?

On to some other show and tell… do you remember this birdie pincushion I designed a while back?

Well, the pattern is now available to purchase under the Fresh Hope Patterns label.

I find it hard to put in to words how I feel when I think about the mothers who are courageous enough to look for and accept help. Children are such a blessing - innocents that deserve the very best that life has to offer – as we all do! It’s so wonderful that there are people out there – like Fresh Hope – who help people to step on to their paths of happiness…

Studio tour – part two!

Thank you so much for your positive feedback about both my new studio space, and my new blog-look! You really know how to make a girl’s day!

I have made a few changes to my blog which I hope you will find useful. If you would prefer to receive my posts via email or RSS feed you can now do so. The buttons for both are situated on the top right of my side bar. My blog address is also different – I am now a “Dot Com” instead of a “Blogger Dot Com”… but don’t worry if you still visit me via blogger – you will be redirected automatically. It’s all good stuff!!

We’re on the countdown to school holidays here in Victoria, with only two more days to go before the kids are home for a couple of weeks! For me, that means making the very most of my serenity *giggle* which has been easy to do these past few days since losing my voice!! But every cloud has a silver lining… at least I don’t have to listen to the sound of my own dulcet tones! My singing voice always sounds SO MUCH better when I’ve got headphones on… but better for everyone all round when I can’t sing at all!! I find it hilarious that I can evacuate a room after uttering just a few notes!!

On the left-hand side of my desk is a pine buffet containing UFO’s, paints and paper crafts, and other tools that don’t necessarily get used on a regular basis. One drawer contains finished magazine projects (to keep them dust-free) and the other is devoted to the creation of fairy dolls! There are batiks, yarns and different kinds of ‘skin’ fabrics together with an array of other ‘sparklies’ for making iridescent wings!

I also use the space in front of the buffet to put up my ironing board when I’m working on projects that require a lot of pressing. It’s great to just swivel my chair, lower the ironing board to my level, and then swivel back to my desk to continue sewing, without having to leave my seat. Although I’m not getting the exercise from walking to the kitchen to use the facilities, it sure is a good time-saver!

I unified the colour of my magazine holders so with the exception of one, they are all white. They house my collection of Australian Homespun magazines, plus pattern books, painting books and business information.

I have always loved how quilting shops display their fat quarters and wanted to recreate something interesting at home as best I could. What you see above is a small wooden shelf/cabinet that I’ve placed on its back so there are two columns to store fabric. You can see this shelf/cabinet in the final photo of my last post – sitting on the shelf above my desk.

I keep my sewing threads in these wee plastic tubs purchased for a couple of dollars from a two-dollar shop!

The pretty wooden painted shabby box on top left of my shelf can be seen in more detail in this post. I store my paints within. The two sewing totes contain trims and needlework projects. You can read more about them here and here. The picture on the wall was gifted to me by a dear friend and I love how the birdcage in the picture ties in with the wren perched on top of the iron stand! The door on the left leads out to our garage so I try and keep the walkway clear – not always easy!!!

I needed somewhere to showcase all the gorgeous hanging gifties that I’ve received from creative friends over the past few years and found an iron “bird stand” very cheaply in a two-dollar shop (pictured centrally in the above photo). I am yet to get a decent close-up shot of it!

There is a plastic storage system in between my desk and the buffet. I covered it in a large remnant of white tablecloth fabric so that the scheme would remain neutral and look tidy. My fabric tubs are all labelled… and I have added a plant for some greenery. I have to admit – the plant is plastic! I’ve always considered plastic plants rather vulgar, preferring the healing qualities of the real deal… but this one looks SO real…and I didn’t want to be getting my fabrics wet while watering! So I cheated!!

The great thing about purchasing an office desk was that the drawers were already set up with dividers. the narrow top drawer houses my rulers, rotary cutters and stationary:

The second has dividers in it, probably for CD storage. They are just the right size for housing fat quarters, but I needed to store my sewing essentials. I discovered that plastic storage tubs (the kind that are used to contain fast food) were the perfect size. You can buy them so cheaply at just $2 for a pack of four! I’m also a bit of a label-queen. I label anything I can get my hands on – so don’t stand still for too long!!! I might just get ya!!

Quilting gloves, measuring tape, plug for the light box and of course, the infamous labeller are kept in the left divider. Here’s some of the rest:

I haven’t photographed my bottom drawer, it has hanging files and contains my own designs, patterns and business information.

Lastly, in front of my monitor sits my treasured pincushion which you can read more about here. I keep paperclips in the wee white metal bucket that I picked up from Spotlight last Easter. My IPod station is plugged in here too, so I can listen to my favourite tunes while I sew.

It has taken me about three months to get this space organised. I tell you this because I can quite often be a “jump in with both feet” kind of a person! Honestly, If I’d had a crystal ball at the end of last year I would not think this transformation possible. But it is! By looking for bargains in sales and opportunity shops (that’s how this all came about in the first place) and realising the potential in everyday items, and repurposing what you have… it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to transform a space. Thrifting and planning have certainly been my two best friends during this process!

All of the nick-nacks I have shown you (lamp, storage tubs, CD boxes, magazine holders, cake stands, shelves, iron bird stand etc…) and the desk and paint for it – have together cost me less than $250. It sure has been a lot cheaper to get the studio of my dreams than I thought it would be!

So there you have it - Dreams DO come true - I hope that yours do, too!!

My new studio space!

It is absolutely amazing what a difference your surroundings can make to your creative energy!

I share my creative space with my husband (aka Mr SUDs) and teenage son, Aaron. The boys are both computer junkies and have half of the “study” designated to their favourite hobby. For years I had been calling this shared room, “ The teenage boys’ Den” and in doing so, as I realise now, had alienated myself from feeling like I belong.

Fortunately I realised the errors of my ways and have since re-named this room: “My new studio” – of course it is still shared – but gee it makes a difference to my sense of worth in this space!

However, I really did need to make my craft area work for me. It was cluttered and ‘busy’, I found it hard to concentrate on what I was doing and longed for a room all to myself as I thought that would be the answer to my ‘perceived’ problems. A room to myself was not an option – but thinking about the situation in a positive way - was! Determined to make the most of what I had, I set to work on a list of all the things that were important to me in order for the space to be successful. First on the list was an uncluttered, neutral working area. Secondly, storage; and thirdly – it had to look serenely beautiful.

The seeds of my ambition started to grow a few months back when I purchased a pre-loved desk from my local charity store. It was love at first sight! A bit of TLC was all that was needed, I gave it a sand-down and a new lick of paint and it was as good as new! I have utilised every bit of space I have – and the desk is working really well for all of my needs.

Let me put the kettle on and make you a virtual cup of tea…. and then I’ll take you on a tour! Are you sitting comfortably?

The ‘new studio’ is in a room situated at the front of our house. The room has large full-length windows along one wall. I took down the net curtains, as we are not overlooked, and wish I had thought to do it years ago. The sun shines through the trees outside at about 2pm and the shadows and sunbeams dance across my desk. It’s so magical! Being the fairy-fanatic that I am, my imagination goes in to full fantasy overload at this time of the day! It is like the room is living and breathing!

The studio also functions as a walk-through to the garage; a traffic route which is unavoidable. So I need to keep the space tidy on a daily basis to ensure that the access is clear and fabrics do not get trampled! I keep the majority of my fabrics and battings stored in big plastic tubs in the laundry.

I wanted a classy, “grown up” look that was neutral – so that my fabric choices did not get confused with the colour of my surroundings. A white desk was a must, and for the ‘grown up’ element I wanted to add a classy lamp. I searched everywhere for the lamp of my dreams and finally found the perfect base in Target (in the sales), and the lampshade in Bunnings. The total cost was less than twenty dollars – cheaper than any I’d seen in charity shops, and exactly what I’d envisioned. You can’t see very well from this photo, but the lamp has four little (ahem – plastic) diamonds hanging down from the top of its base! (Plastic diamonds? See, I told you I was classy!!!)

I picked up the wooden storage box at an op shop, it has heart cut-outs in each handle. I was going to paint it antique white until I realised it was made out of my favourite wood, walnut. I keep my pens, scissors, and other useful everyday tools, in this box. The cake stand serves as a pretty fabric display – the perfect size for a honey bun! A girl needs “pretties” to inspire her as well as functionality. I picked up a lot of ideas from Karen at Sew Many Ways, and the photo-frame idea was one of them. To keep track of all your passwords (for fabric stores, etc.) just print a list and add it to the back of this two-sided photo frame. The frame costs two dollars from IKEA. Actually, I have been hugely inspired by Karen – she is the personification of “the ideas girl” – so amazing! She has the most wonderful studio, check it out here. One of the things I took on board was Karen’s suggestion to purchase storage solutions in a limited colour palette. By keeping to one or two colours, it doesn’t matter how many different ‘types’ of storage you have available, it all has something in common to tie the design scheme together – its colour. I chose black and white as my base colours, and purchased said-colour CD storage boxes from IKEA. I also picked up some gift-boxes from my local two dollar shop, as you can see on top of my transparent fabric tubs on the left of this next photo.

The shelves are used for book and fabric storage, plus some buttons, notions, paintbrushes and a few other pretties!

I have ambient lighting from my ‘classy’ desk lamp, overhead lighting, and task lighting from this functional lamp that utilises a daylight bulb.

My sewing machine is constantly plugged in, the cables are out of the way and it’s as easy as just pulling it forward…

If I need to cut fabric, I push the machine back and set up the cutting mat…

I store my cutting mats, template plastic (and three huge fabric tubs) in the desk space beside me allocated for the computer… because I use a laptop (I’ll show you where that lives in a minute) the disused space is an ideal storage solution.

Under my desk there is dedicated storage for my light box and sewing-machine table:

My laptop is situated on a small printing table beside my desk, on a bright pink shelf that used to be on my old desk. On top sits the printer, and beneath is a cabinet containing printing papers and filing.

Even my mouse-mat is functional! A pad of weekly planners that can be torn off each week to reveal a new page.

To my left is a plastic storage system and pine buffet where most of my everyday tools and fabrics are kept. I will share more photos of that part of the room in my next post, together with some other storage solutions. In the meantime, here’s a photo to give you the lay of the land.

I hope you enjoyed the tour?! It has taken me a while to get things how I’ve wanted them, and I’m really glad I didn’t rush it. It’s a compact space but it works really well for me. I used to wish for a studio space of my own, but having thought on it a lot, even if we could afford to do it right now, I’m not sure that I would actually want to be in a room away from my family. That feeling has been a real eye-opener for me. When the boys are noisy, I will put my headphones on. When I need to concentrate, they will put their headphones on! Now that I have a serene space in which to work, I feel so much more relaxed and happy – and its certainly helping with my mojo – which has been bursting from its seams of late!

It seems only fitting to quote Karen’s motto: “The happiest people don’t have the best of everything… They just make the best of everything they have.”

A girl’s just got to share!

I have a couple of exciting things to share with you, my friends!

Firstly, my lovely friend Anna over at Anna Rosa Designs is celebrating her 100th blog post and is celebrating with a gorgeous giveaway. Anna and I started blogging at the same time and share something (I should say, someone) very special in common – our friend, Kerryanne! Kerry not only set up our blogs for us but she put me and Anna in contact with each other, and as the old saying goes, I haven’t looked back since!

A little bit of everything…

The last two or three weeks have been a hive of activity!

Cushions were made for the family room…

My little Preppie participated in her very first school performance, singing three Abba songs, and I cried with pride!

Two birthday parties meant two egg & spoon races!

Three patterns have been written – one for charity - and two for an Australian craft magazine. Here’s a sneak peek!

Unfortunately we’ve all had coughs and colds over the past few weeks, the kids have been off school quite a bit which can’t be helped. It’s actually quite nice having them around even though I don’t wish them to be ill.

I have been organising my studio space too… I’m so excited about it and can’t wait to share some pics with you! I’m all fired up! You know that butterflies-in-the-tummy feeling you get after you’ve been to a craft or quilt show, or are just about to start a new project? Yep – that’s me!

Successful stuffing– a tutorial for the novice!

I decided to make a doll this weekend, and as I was in the process of creation I remembered that quite a few of my friends had asked me how I stuff my dolls so firmly and without unsightly ‘bumps’. So – I thought I would share my tips with you.

Of course, there is no right or wrong way to stuff a doll or a soft toy… but this process is the one that works best for me.

This is a fairly intensive post primarily aimed at beginner doll makers – so if you want to read on – you might want to get a nice cuppa and make yourself comfortable for a while!

Back to basics

Fabric choice

First of all let’s think about fabric choice. To choose the most appropriate fabric depends on the style of doll (or softie) you are making. Most country-style dolls are designed with flat faces (two pieces of fabric sewn together and turned right sides out) and are created with tightly-woven 100 per cent cotton fabric. The doll I am working on at the moment is a good example of this:

The pattern is called Faerie Noelle and has been designed by Annie Smith of Country Keepsakes.

A tightly-woven fabric is defined by its thread count – the higher the number, the thinner each individual thread is and more importantly, the more tightly it is woven. Which means it is less likely to fray – and exactly what we need for a successfully-stuffed doll! The seams are less likely to split or gape. Here’s an example of various fabrics where you can visibly see a difference in how tightly-woven they are:

From left to right: loosely-woven Hessian, then Calico, Homespun, cotton, and finally, tightly-woven quilting cotton fabric.

Pimatex cotton is widely used by doll-makers due to its high thread count and good quality, it comes in various plain hues, can be overdyed or indeed, purchased in various patterns. For country-style dolls, muslin or seeded calico is a popular fabric choice. I am using the latter for the Faerie Noelle doll.

If you have been making cloth dolls for a while and want to challenge yourself with needle-sculpted dolls (dolls with 3D facial features)… you will need a bit more ‘give’ or a one-way stretch in the fabric. For example, I used a Craft Velour to make this Pixie doll.

Craft Velour is a polyester fabric, but still tightly woven. It has enough stretch that it can be manipulated, which is essential for needle-sculpting as the face will need to take on characteristics created by 3D effects. Where, and how densely you stuff a face within this fabric can determine the final ‘look’ of the doll – thus is the wonder of ‘stuffing’!! I won’t talk any more about advanced doll-making at this stage, but just wanted to let you know that there are other products out there in the market if you want to take the doll-making experience one step further. A note on stitch length

Okay, so you’ve selected your pattern and your fabrics and it’s now time to sew the basic shapes from the pattern. A lot of designers will state in their patterns that a smaller stitch length is advisable for areas of the doll that will take a lot of strain – such as the neck, for example. If the doll is intended for child’s play, it’s essential that the seams are strong.

I stuff my dolls firmly and therefore, to reduce strain on the seams, I use a smaller stitch length for ALL parts that will be stuffed. I learned by trial and error! I’ve made toys in the past, such as this dragon, that have had the seams burst due to my poor choice in fabric and from using a standard stitch length:

Hmmm… another thing which didn’t help to disguise the bulging seams was the use of a contrasting thread!! It’s a good idea to use matching thread in your sewing machine, as you are my witness!!

(The dragon on the right was made a few years later and I chose a good quality quilting fabric for his body and a stretch jersey for his snout,wings, horns and tummy, as they required a bit of sculpting.)

The standard stitch length on sewing machines differ marginally. My Brother machine has a standard stitch length of 2.5 and I adjust it to 1.6 for ALL of the sewing I do when constructing body parts, or indeed any parts of a pattern that require stuffing. (If I am making individual fingers for a hand on a more advanced doll, I go down to a stitch length of 1.4)

Here is what the stitch length adjustment looks like on my machine. If you are unsure how to change yours – just refer to the manual or go online and search Google!

What stuffing do I use?

Most craft stores sell polyester stuffing – the type that is used in the manufacturing of pillows and cushions. This is the most common option as it’s reasonably-priced and widely available (if you live by a craft store, of course!!). The polyester stuffing has a high loft, which means that it is very springy and full of air.

Tip: If you don’t live close to a craft store and are desperate to get hold of some stuffing, you could wash an old polyester pillow or cushion and once dry, use the stuffing from within.

I actually prefer to use wool stuffing. It has a lower loft, which means that when you stuff with it, it doesn’t bounce back up again… it packs in to the space more densely, and I have found it much easier to work with.

Wool stuffing is most commonly used for bear making (as I understand it), and can be purchased at bear-making supply stores. It is however ,more expensive than it’s polyester neighbour. I just love the feel of the stuff! Therefore, I use it in projects that I’ve put a lot of work or money in to.

Stuffing tools

Chop sticks are most commonly used to insert stuffing. I have a specially-designed ‘stuffing fork’ manufactured by American doll artist, Barbara Willis (purchased from here). It’s pictured below and has a blue and white pattern on its handle. Also pictured is a chopstick, a small wooden stuffing stick, and some doll-turning tubes.

The little wooden tool was much cheaper and purchased from a bear-making supply store. The one thing that the ‘stuffing fork’ and wooden tool have in common – is that their ends are notched – enabling them to get a good grip on the stuffing when you are pushing it in to position.

If you would like to make your own tool - you could carefully cut a notch in the end of a chop stick to create the same effect – just make sure you keep your hands and fingers safe!!

The technique

I discovered that the key to my success was to use very small amounts of stuffing… here is an example of how much I use to insert in to a shape each time I stuff. I’ve placed a 10c coin, a 20pence piece and one Euro in the photo to aid you in visualising the exact amount of polyester stuffing I use.

And the wool-stuffing:

Notice I use less wool stuffing? That’s because it’s more dense. There is probably the same amount of stuffing in each photo, but you can see the difference in the ‘loft’.

In this next photo, I have inserted one of the turning tubes in to the leg piece to be stuffed. This aids in allowing the stuffing to slip down an elongated shape (such as a long leg or arm) easily, and it also prevents the raw edge of the opening from fraying.

Using a tube is personal preference and isn’t usually necessary when stuffing with a stuffing fork or other ‘notched’ tool. However, I find it useful.

Here is the ‘stuffing’ part:

When I first begin stuffing – let’s use a leg and foot for example – I pack it into the furthermost and smallest area – in this case, the toe area. Any “little” areas should be filled first.

Once the stuffing is in position, I squash it down with the stuffing fork by jabbing at it four or five times. Then repeat again with another small amount of stuffing. As far as ‘jabbing’ at the stuffing is concerned – I really go for it! I’m quite aggressive with prodding it and packing it down, and I do so EVERY time I insert more stuffing. You want to get the stuffing as tight as you can so that it doesn’t spring back up.

To give you an idea of how long it takes me to stuff a doll - It took about 40 minutes for me to stuff this leg (7 inches). I know it’s a long time for a little item – but if you don’t want any lumps and bumps, patience is the way to go. You can achieve a densely-packed, solid-feeling leg by using this technique.

There you have it – one completed leg, stuffed to the line as shown on the pattern piece. If you do happen to have a few lumps, try rolling the leg in between your hands as if you are making a sausage shape out of Play doe.

But all being well you shouldn’t have to do this - the key is to use small amounts of stuffing, pack it down firmly, and be patient. But most of all – enjoy the process!!

Thank you & surprise revealed!

A big thank you to everyone who ‘flew by’ yesterday to wish me a Happy Birthday! That was a lovely surprise, and my little robin friend was so sweet to send you over! I’m sorry I wasn’t expecting you… I would have had treats on the table and coffee brewing in the pot… but such is the way of lovely surprises!!

If you are reading this and wondering what on earth I’m talking about… the lovely Dawn sent out a birthday greeting to me on her blog yesterday. I know, I kept it quiet, I’m pretty shy about some things. People who first meet me find it hard to believe that I can be shy, because I will talk to anyone and everyone. But there you go – it must be the Gemini in me – I’m a contradiction in terms!!

Surprise revealed!

But I’m excited today too – because this day I get to reveal a surprise! Do you remember the giveaway I had on my blog a few weeks ago? Well, the ‘surprise parcel’ has now been received by the lovely Illene, so I can show you what it contained!

A Pom Pom de Paris layer cake – as you guessed! But also – the “something to whet your appetite” (as was my clue) is this novelty croissant pincushion. It’s a new design of mine and will be accompanied by a needle-case and bag… what do you think?

And do you remember me telling you that I was waiting on receiving a package from France? Well… wait to you see these little belles!!

The cutest little pin toppers you are ever likely to see!

I purchased them online from Nathy Creations. The website is in French but it’s very easy to navigate. I used Google Translate to help me when I had problems understanding the language. Isn’t the internet wonderful? Nathy’s service is fantastic – the pin toppers arrived in my mailbox in less than a week! She also makes buttons too – and each creation is made from layering the modelling material – no paint involved. Clever eh?

I had such fun with this giveaway – and delighted in making these croissants – and photographing them!

Are you in love with Aviary Too?!

This gorgeous bundle of textured goodness arrived at my doorstep this morning and I have been fondling it ever since!

It is of course Aviary 2 by Joel Dewberry, and is destined to become two handbags… one for a friend and one for moi! I just need to decide on a pattern, but will most likely go with the Swing Bag by Amy Butler – it’s such a great pattern for showcasing a feature fabric!

I am in the midst of writing patterns at the moment. Nothing to show for a while yet but lots going on behind the scenes! A parcel of happiness and quilting inspiration

Doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun? I have been busy with family commitments these past couple of weeks but have still managed some time to get some sewing in… it’s like a little bakers shop at my desk! But more on that later!

I received a wonderful parcel last week from the gorgeous Cyndi over at Bluebird’s Wing! Have you visited Cyndi? She is such a lovely, lovely lady and full of inspiration – if you know her already I’m sure you would agree! She’s sweet and kind and makes the most amazing handbags that always have me drooling. Well, Cyndi also has some amazing giveaways on her blog and I was lucky enough to win one of them!

Look at these sweet little charm squares, I’ve never seen fabric packaged so cute!

The line is called Buttercup by Joanna Figueroa, Fig Tree & Co for Moda. I wonder what I shall make with them? Any suggestions? I also love the card Cyndi gave me, illustrated by one of my favourite artists, Mary Engelbreit.

Cyndi also included some sweet stationery and some chocolate – thank you SO much Cyndi!!!

I am busting at the seams to make a handbag… I have a design in my head ready to be put on paper. I always do most of my designing in my head before the pencils come out, fine-tuning and nutting out the –how to’s! I guess that’s because most of my designs do not involve drawings as such – although stitchery is definitely an area I want to explore more of. Anyhow… I’ve been wanting to get into more traditional patchwork too, and spent some time on Mothers’ Day watching this dvd…

“Make a lone star quilt” with Michelle Marvig. The dvd came with this month’s issue of Australian Homespun magazine. It’s excellent! Michelle is so clear and easy to listen to, I’d imagine her classes would be lots of fun and you’d learn so much. If the dvd is anything to go by, she’s a great teacher. so this is another project added to my ever increasing to-do list! My friend, Vicki, made a lone star quilt and I was fortunate enough to see it in progress – I’ve been keen to make one ever since and now at last I feel more confident to give it a go… okay, ALMOST confident to give it a go!!

Happy Easter & some finishes!

HAPPY EASTER MY FRIENDS!!

I hope that you are enjoying this beautiful weekend?!

This morning saw the awakening of young Rosie along with the dawn… it took a while for these bleary eyes to focus on the shiny wrappers of the Easter eggs that the Easter Bunny had very kindly left hidden inside the house.

The sun is shining and I am sat here listening to my family enjoy the fresh air outside in the garden. I’ve left them to it so that I could pop inside and say Hello!

I have some finishes to share with you! Do you remember the ceramics that Rosie and I painted last week? This is what they looked like before they were fired:

I also completed painting the little crib that I picked up for Rosie at the op shop. It went from this:

I made a little mattress first, then a sheet, and a double-sided blanket, topped with a teeny weeny pieced quilt using fabrics designed by Lynette Anderson.

It has been a very busy week in the SUDs household. We had an old friend from Blighty stay with us for a couple of days and I can’t tell you how good it was to hear a London accent! Love it! The lovely thing about having guests from overseas is showing them the local sights. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t great but we frequented some of my favourite ‘burbs’ up in the Dandenong Ranges.

I also went to the AQC last Saturday which was as inspirational as always! I didn’t take any photos, there were quite a few signs up at the stands requesting no photography. But I had a lovely time with my ‘painting buddies’ Anne and Karen. (They’re busy gals – but I might get them blogging one of these days!!!)

I was thrilled to bits to meet Lizzie from A House in the Country. We got time for a hug, and will hopefully meet up at the next show! Lizzie is just as I imagined her – as vibrant and gorgeous in ‘real life’ as she is in her written word! Lizzie was with the wonderful Jodie and Annie. I have to tell you that Jodie was sporting the most amazing red polkadot-with pom-pom trolley that I drooled all over (Sorry Jod if it got wet… thank goodness you made it from oilcloth!!!)

I was very refrained – unlike me I know! But I did buy these fabrics from my favourite stall, Thread and Ginger.

These are Tilda fabrics. I also picked up these romantic fabrics by Quilt Gate, it’s the Mary Rose Collection.

I have been stealing a few moments in between kids play dates and general holiday-activities, to write a new pattern too… burning the midnight oil as it’s the only time of the day where there is complete peace and quiet! Aaaahhhh the serenity!!!!

I’d just like to take this opportunity my friends, to apologize for not responding to my comments of late – time has just run away with me and it really prays on my mind that I haven’t replied even just to say “thanks for dropping by!” I really appreciate you taking the time to stop and leave me a note – so please forgive me and know that I sincerely enjoy reading your messages. I shall give myself a wrap over the knuckles on your behalf!

A morning at the Ceramic Cafe

We are almost at the end of our first week of school holidays here in Victoria, and there has been a lot of crafty pursuits happening in the SUDs household, including baking, drawing and painting… soon I shall be teaching my young daughter some sewing, too!

But today we took our paintbrushes outside of the home and met up with some like-minded friends (my “painting buddies”, Anne & Karen, and their two gorgeous girls) to go to the amazing Ceramic Cafe.

We had such a fun morning, the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves – as did us adults! If you live in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne and are looking for a fun activity this school holidays – I thoroughly recommend this place!

Now to wait a week and collect our finished items… what shall we do in the meantime? Hmmm… more painting!!

Some bunny is SO cute!

This Easter Bunny has a sweet shabby egg on her tummy…

She has the cutest fluffy tail, and pink pads on her hind legs…

And big bunny ears just the right size to cover two little girls’ ponytails!

Revamping some new (old) finds!

Wow – thank you for the fantastic response to my surprise giveaway! I have enjoyed reading your comments and listening to your stories of gift-giving and receiving!

It seems like quite a number of you like to squeeze and shake your parcels, and ask the gift-giver lots of questions. I have a very expressionate face that gives away everything… so it’s a good job there’s no web-cam here!

Okay! So here’s a cryptic clue: You don’t need to be a General to enjoy this textured bliss!

On to other ‘doings’! I am SO excited because I recently purchased a pre-loved desk from my local charity shop.

I love it! What do you think? It looks in great condition but does need a new paint-job; so I’ve left it in our family room until I get around to doing the messy jobs of sanding and painting. I need to get some good lighting for it too – as that’s one essential element that is missing from my current work space.

My friends know only too well how I feel about my creative area – I refer to it as “the teenage boys’ den”. I only have one teenager but my husband counts for at least two more!!! The room is cluttered and untidy with chip packets wafting around the room like tumbleweed… oh okay… I’m exaggerating about the chip packets but you get the picture?!

When I spotted this desk I thought I could live in shabby chic heaven… even if the rest of the room is covered in Xbox games and controllers… at least I can look directly in front of me at the country-style desk, and lose myself in it! I’ll show you step-by-step as I make my sewing-space transformation!

While at the charity shop I also picked up this little wooden crib:

I have started base-coating it in white, and look forward to making some sweet bedding to fit it. It’s a surprise Easter gift for my daughter! Talking of Easter, I also need to make a bunny costume for an Easter-themed day at school this Friday… wish me luck!

Are you one of those people who surreptitiously rips the wrapping paper of a parcel to peek at what’s inside? Or - on the contrary – would you look away sharpish if you thought that the surprise might be accidentally revealed before it’s time???

I fall in to the second category – I don’t like to know what’s inside a parcel until it’s time to open it! My sister in England, on the other hand, can guess what’s inside a parcel at ten paces! Over the years, my brother and I have tried to disguise gifts within oversized boxes, and she will even guess that we’ve done just that. She’s a little minx!

New Beginnings kits and some warmth for Japan

I have been sat here reflecting so much on world events that I didn’t know where to begin to write this post. I have written and re-written it several times… because when it comes to matters of the heart, words fail me.

I feel heartbroken for the people affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, as all of us do. And so often we feel a very human need to help in any way we can, especially on a practical level.

Today, I read on Superbuzzy’s blog that an American sleeping bag manufacturer is supplying winter weight sleeping bags to those who greatly need them in Japan, for only $6 US dollars, each.

To anyone reading this post who has been affected by the global natural disasters around the world, I’d like you to know that I am holding you in my prayers. xx

I had a sort through my sewing patterns recently and had a pile of them sitting on my sideboard ready to go to the Op shop… and then I discovered the perfect place for them – Queensland. I got the details and address from the Among the Gum Trees blog!

Who knows, maybe one of those patterns is one that a fellow sewer has always wanted, or perhaps even lost. I was thinking that if I lost my craft patterns and magazines, I’d be most sad at losing those that were no longer available to purchase. Opportunity shops are a great source for buying old magazines to add to your collection, or to fill any gaps. I never throw magazines out – they always go to the charity shop!

The Gum Tree Designers have done a wonderful job coordinating ‘New Beginnings kits’ (their own initiative) to be sent to quilters and sewers in Queensland, NSW and Victoria townships that have been affected by floods. I read on the blog today that approx. 450 kits have been received from lovely sewers, along with donations for postage and other craft supplies. That sure would have kept those angel co-coordinators busy! Thank you SO much Gum Tree gals!!!

I made two kits, both containing needle cases and scissor keepers that I made from patterns in Lynette Anderson’s book, It’s Quilting Cats and Dogs. Want to see?

The little animals are retractable tape measures – if you look at the pig you can see the tape measure coming out of his ear! (So if you make a mistake with your measuring – you can honestly say – “I made a real pigs ear of that!” Ha!)

The Fairy Park

Once upon a time, in a land far far away, there lived a pretty little princess named Rosie…

“Welcome to my Kingdom!” exclaimed the little princess! “Let me take you on a tour!”

In to the castle we wander

Prince Aaron mounts his noble steed…

While the little princess takes the snail trail!

King Toad watches over the kingdom to make sure there are no villains…

…because if caught, they are placed in the stocks for later questioning. (Nb. Prisoners who are generous with lollies/candy have been known to be released without charge *wink*!)

The kingdom is vast and plentiful…

With houses just the right size for little princesses!

And 1930’s play equipment that is so much fun!

If you are very quiet and listen carefully… you can hear the fairies singing in the beautiful gardens!

Polka dots… you know I love you!

I have gone super-crazy, stark raving bonkers and wild with passion over red and white polka dots! (As some might say… I don’t get out much! Ha!)

The love affair began a few months ago when I started collecting kitchenware items for the gorgeous Deb in NZ. Deb is doing up her kitchen (hence the theme) and I wanted to surprise her with a special package because she’s such a sweet friend. A friend who has really made a difference and has put a smile on my dial more times than I can shake a stick at! :-)

(There you go Deb – some wonderful mental imagery for you – me looking in the mirror and shaking a stick while I smile!!!)

Egg cups, tea bag saucer, apron, mushroom decorations, buttons, chocolates and a very special item designed especially for Deb – that I am yet to be able to show you – so there’s just a sneak peek in the photo.

Deb also won the Christmas-themed photo album cover that I gave away after designing it for ‘Simply Christmas’ over at the Shabby Art Boutique (talking of which – have you seen Kerryanne’s recent sneak peeks? GAWJUS!!)

Back to the polka dots! The love affair has been in full swing, and I recently succumbed again when making a bag for my friends’ birthday…

I created this bag using the Bella bag pattern by Moonshine Designs, and the pattern is absolutely fabulous! :-) Easy to follow with great instructions to get that professional finish.

I added a key fob to the inside of the bag so that keys or a mobile phone holder (in this instance) could be attached. To the inside pocket I added a love-heart shaped zipper pull manufactured by Birch. Very easy to do with only a couple of minor ‘naughty’ words uttered during the installation process!

I then put together a mobile phone holder and in true Vikki fashion, I was still sewing half an hour before I left for the party. Due to my panic, I wound up making it too small. Mr SUDs very helpfully contributed: “You should have got the dimensions for the phone!”…

…to which I replied, “I DID!”

We both had a good giggle, with Mr SUDs obviously thinking that he should have seen that one coming!!!

But hey – I bet no-one else has a lipstick holder attached to a key fob in their hand bag????!!!! Ah yes – that’s what it was intended for all along!!!! <cheeky grin> :-)

My friend really loves to coordinate her attire, and I love to make coordinating ‘everything’, so I purchased a wooden bangle and covered it in strips of fabric, adhering them to the inside edge of the bangle using a hot glue gun. It was quick and easy to make… and as a dear friend of mine in England would say, “Yeah – it looks it n’all!!” LOL

Well that’s enough spotty dotty news for one day… but I’m sure there will be future instalments!
